In October of 2006, Artspace was invited to Hamilton to perform a Preliminary Feasibility Visit to assess the viability of an affordable, mixed-use, arts-based live/work project within close proximity of the Central Business District. While few cities with a population less than 100,000 could support an ideal project of 30-35 residential units, it was quickly realized that Hamilton was an exception.
To better understand the demand for an arts-related space in Hamilton, Artspace was asked to complete an Artist Market Study, a full-fledged survey designed to reach 7,500 artists within a 50-mile radius of Hamilton. The results of the survey confirmed the need for affordable live/work space for artists and their families, short-term or occasional exhibit and gallery space, and permanent spaces for arts and cultural organizations.
Artspace is currently planning for 36 units of affordable housing for families in Hamilton, Ohio. In the process, Artspace will transform the currently vacant historic building located at 220 through 224 High Street into a community asset that will provide ground floor space for local non-profit organizations, commercial space for small businesses, and outdoor plaza areas for residents and for the greater community. This Artspace project will complement the rehabilitation activities occurring at the neighboring Mercantile Block and will advance the downtown economic development efforts on High Street.

PROJECT UPDATE:
Efforts are underway to remove the large metal screen that was attached to the front facade in 1966, to restore the building's historic character.
On September 26, 2010, the Hamilton City Council approved the issuance of a letter of intent for Artspace to secure a small strip of additional land adjacent to the property that will benefit both Artspace Hamilton Lofts and the neighboring lot.
